Projects :: Railing Historic

This rail was replaced on one of Ann Arbor’s most historic homes. Working on this house has been one of my favorite on going projects. The carpentry in this old house is absolutely beautiful. It’s the kind of house carpenters feel honored to work on. We replaced several dozen feet of railing that stood for over 100 years. Every piece of railing had to be milled to match the original 19th century pieces. We used a combination of clear Western Red Cedar and Ipe (from a managed forest.) After things were painted you could not tell what rail is new and what is old.
